It's all about relationships

Wherever we go we establish relationships. Granted, it's generally just passing acquaintances--the bus driver who helps us out, the security guard who explains a piece of art, the man who comes up and offers suggestions of places to go--these are the people who make our travels so rich. And sometimes we meet someone who becomes a more permanent part of our lives.

Today in Halifax was a great example. We started the day at a small cafe where the owner sat down while we were eating to tell us a story about pancakes. When we left she and the other people in the cafe all sent us on our way with waves and best wishes. We had become friends.

Best ever pancakes at Annie's Cafe.

Soon after, we were sitting at the waterfront when our very good friends, Margo and Ron, who we'd met on the train from Vancouver, came by. Hugs all around and introductions to their friends--they are in Halifax for a curling tournament. Margo gave me her Margarita League curling pin, which I will wear proudly. These are friends we will keep and possibly visit next time we are in Victoria.

A quick escape from the train at Capreol Station with Margo and Ron.

We ran into Margo and Ron with their curling teammates in Halifax.

We had arranged a ride with Greg, a tour driver, to take us out to the coast. We were hoping to go to Prospect where our friend Alex used to have a cottage--we'd always wanted to go see it in Nova Scotia. The other passenger, Ross, was agreeable so we went on a quest to find Alex's cottage. All four of us got into the spirit, trying to figure out where it was. Turns out it was gone, there was a new gravel area where the cottage had been, but the town was absolutely charming and the scrub vegetation was beautiful and wild. We could have stayed there forever. Greg later thanked us for bringing him there--he hadn't been in Prospect for a while. It was a perfect trip with a stop at Peggy's Cove and lots of talking along the way. We may not really know Greg and Ross, but we spent a lovely day together and could tell you a lot about them.

Final story for the day. We're staying at an airbnb, owned by a young man named Kirk. We haven't met Kirk but he sent instructions on how to find the key and each day he checks in by text to see if everything is okay and if we need anything. We've had a friendly texting relationship for the last few days. We found out yesterday that a new guest is coming tomorrow so we need to be out of here by noon for the cleaner but we're not leaving Halifax until 2:30 by shuttle. We worried about what to do during those 2.5 hours until we decided to ask Kirk if we could store our bags here and pick them up later. "Heck, yeah" was the answer. It takes trust to let someone in when the apartment is newly cleaned and ready but we've established a relationship. He knows we won't take the bottle of wine he leaves for new guests.

Our new friend Olga from Two If By Sea at Dartmouth, but that's another story.
